Coronavirus, the WHO declares the Pandemic

Coronavirus, the World Health Organization declares the pandemic

The World Health Organization has declared the Coronavirus a global pandemic. After causing more than 120,000 infections in more than 90 countries around the world, experts rushed to the shelters to prevent the virus from spreading further, requiring a series of measures, including drastic ones, such as stopping production activities and limiting circulation also via land.

The decision had been in the air for a few days and confirmation has now arrived: the World Health Organization has declared the Coronavirus emergency ” pandemic “, explaining that in the last two weeks cases outside China have increased by 13 times. The infection, which broke out in China, precisely in the city of Wuhan, at the end of last December, has spread to over ninety countries, for a total, updated to date – March 11 – of 119,711 infected and 4,350 dead. This means that individual states must step back from now on and execute WHO plans to prevent the new virus from spreading further. Experts will be able to request a series of measures, including drastic ones, such as stopping production activities and limits to circulation also by land. Measures that could be applied primarily in our country, the third in the number of infections after China and South Korea.

What does the WHO declaration of pandemic entail?

The pandemic declaration, which differs from the simple epidemic, has become necessary to prevent further cases of infections. On the other hand, for days there have been at least two criteria for such a definition for Covid-19 infection: it spreads among people and can be fatal. Its global characteristic was finally confirmed by reliable data on the first African and South American outbreaks. “With the declaration of the pandemic state, the WHO can send its operators to the site, such as stopping certain activities or also transport by land “. However, the expert stressed, there is no obligation,” but failure to comply with the provisions would amount to the non-application of international standards, which implies the application of sanctions “. He was echoed by the general manager Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus:” There are countries, however, that have shown that this virus can be contained, so we must not give up and adopt a global approach. “Based on what has been done in China, therefore, there is hope for experts to control the virus, but the concern is above all for countries where the health system is not so developed that it can stem the spread of infections.

The pandemics of history

That infection with Covid-19 is not the first pandemic that the world is facing. One of the first traces of which is recorded is that of typhoid fever during the Peloponnese war, in the fifth century BC. The outbreak of the so-called “Athens plague” affected much of the eastern Mediterranean. But the mother of all pandemics, reaching the twentieth century, is certainly the Spanish influence, so-called because the first news about it was reported by the Spanish newspapers which, not being involved in the First World War, was not subject to war censorship. The virus infected half a billion people and killed at least 25 million, although some estimates speak of 50-100 million deaths. Asian flu in 1957, Hong Kong flu in 1968 and HIV has also declared a pandemic .
